Where does the needle go again? - The Boston Globe reported today that 11 current free agents will be named in The Mitchell Report and that all 11 players have been notified. Jose Guillen, allegedly busted in a Florida sting earlier this week, is reportedly one of the players named. Wow. Let's take a step back for a minute.
The Mitchell Report doesn't have a date for its release and now, we're being told that it could be January until its release. Most free agent signings are between now and January 1st, so you'd have to imagine that we're going to have to know very soon who these guys are solely due on their status. Will there be scrubs? Of course. Will there be big names? I dunno, because if you look at this lowly list, there aren't any big names outside of A-Rod, Mike Lowell, Torri Hunter, Andruw Jones and Barry Bonds. My best guess is that the names will be guys like Guillen, who are fringe stars or just holding on. In fact, I'm going to make my personal list of who I think the 11 guys are and hold it in private. Then, I'll release it after these guys are exposed and we'll see how close I am. What fun!
Baseball takes measure to protect base coaches - In a move that was probably long overdue, MLB will make 1st and 3rd base coaches wear some sort of protective helmets in 2008. This move is help prevent sad situations like the one that befell Colorado minor league coach Mike Coolbaugh, who was killed by a line drive on July 22nd. While critics may say that one unfortunate incident shouldn't change something that has been untouched in baseball history, there was a time when the NHL didn't have nets at the ends of their arenas and someone was killed. I will tell you that it's only a matter of time before baseball follows suit due to the screaming shots that fly into the stands every night at parks around the country. You may think I'm crazy, but wait until someone dies. Things will change quite quickly.
This story is just funny - An Illinois woman is suing the St. Louis Cardinals for displaying a text message that insinuated her daughter had an STD. I swear I'm not making this up. Please keep in mind this incident happened in May and it's NOVEMBER. I guess somebody needs some money for Christmas presents. By the way, the suit is for a whopping $25,000.
